BATESVILLE – December 15, 2014 – Keith Shireman, athletic trainer for the Batesville Junior and Senior high schools, was named Monday as the December 2014 recipient of the “Citizens Bank Above & Beyond Award” for the Batesville School District.
Shireman provided immediate assistance and administered CPR to Pioneer football player Max Rucker, who collapsed from a heart condition at practice on Nov. 19. Shireman cared for Rucker until ambulance attendants arrived and took him to the hospital. He has since recovered.
Citizens Bank and the district created the award three years ago to recognize school staff members for exceptional service to students, parents, their school, peers and the district. Personnel throughout the district nominate prospective recipients of the monthly award, which includes a certificate from the Board of Education and a $50 gift card from Citizens Bank.
Nearly 30 nominations recommended Shireman for the December award, most of which mentioned his efforts that helped save Max Rucker’s life. Some sample comments:
- “Keith truly cares about all the students in the athletic program as well as their personal well-being.”
- “Keith loves kids. He loves what he does, and he gives so much time to our kids!!”
- “Keith is a true professional in his dealings with our athletes. He always follows up treatment and rehab with a phone call to our parents. He really cares for our kids and shows it every day.”
